Parents worldwide are becoming more aware of the impact of footwear on children’s foot health, driving the growing demand for barefoot shoes.
Since children’s feet are still developing, the right shoes can play a big role in healthy growth. Barefoot shoes support this process naturally, without unnecessary restrictions.
Barefoot shoes are designed to mimic the feeling of walking or running without shoes, while still providing basic protection. Unlike traditional footwear, they have:
The goal is to promote a more natural walking pattern, strengthen foot muscles, and improve balance, all while letting children feel the ground beneath their feet. By combining freedom of movement with gentle protection, barefoot shoes offer a unique way to support healthy foot development.
Parents who choose barefoot shoes are giving their children the opportunity to develop healthy walking habits from the very first steps.
Barefoot shoes offer several advantages for growing feet, posture, and overall body mechanics.
Ideally, children would wear barefoot shoes from the start, allowing their feet to develop naturally from the very first steps. However, if your child has been wearing regular shoes, it’s important to transition gradually to barefoot footwear.
Give your child’s muscles, tendons, and joints time to adapt and avoid discomfort or injury.
1. Begin with short adventures: Begin by wearing barefoot shoes for short periods—about 20–30 minutes per day. Gradually increase the duration as feet grow stronger. Start with easy walks or low-impact activities before moving on to more active play.
2. Watch for cues: Watch for any signs of discomfort, fatigue, or unusual walking patterns. If your child experiences pain, reduce wearing time and allow muscles to adjust.
3. Build foot strength: Encourage exercises like balancing on one leg, walking on uneven surfaces, or gentle toe and heel lifts. These activities help strengthen foot and lower leg muscles, making the transition smoother.
4. Pick kid-friendly surfaces: Begin with soft surfaces like grass or rubber mats. Then, gradually start on harder surfaces such as concrete.
This season, we introduce an extra-grip sole made from Lifolit, a material that enhances flexibility and stability. Existing favorites have also been refreshed with playful, colorful patterns that capture children’s curiosity and joy.
Soft, lightweight materials ensure comfort throughout the day, supporting little ones as they explore the world around them.
Designed for little dreamers just beginning to walk, Barefoot Prewalkers feature a wide, raised toe space and a thin, flexible rubber sole that supports natural foot development.
They come with removable insoles and are available in chrome-free leather or sheepskin linings, ensuring safety, softness, and comfort during those precious first steps.
Based on parent feedback and market research, we created the Barefoot UP, a series tailored for children with higher arches.
These boots offer extra volume, a removable flat insole, and a TEX membrane that makes them waterproof. With a hydrophobic upper surface that repels water and dirt, they’re as practical as they are supportive.
The updated Zeru model now features a more durable sole while keeping every step light and natural.
The Zeru model features a rounder toe space and a slightly narrower fit with an urban, stylish look. Although slightly narrower than our barefoot models with the extra-grip outsole, it still offers enough space for natural toe movement and healthy development.
Perfect for indoor use, the slippers keep little feet cozy and supported, while the canvas shoes can also be worn outdoors in dry weather.
Some styles are even available up to size 42, making them a great choice for both kids and grown-ups who appreciate barefoot comfort. Depending on the model, you can choose between an extra-grip outsole for added stability or a Vibram outsole for superior durability and performance.
The Wooly line is crafted from 50% recycled wool, offering warmth and softness in one. For extra practicality, certain models are washable at temperatures below 30°C, ensuring easy care and long-lasting freshness.
While barefoot shoes offer many benefits for natural foot development, they are not suitable for everyone. Parents should carefully consider their child’s foot health before making the switch.
Children (or adults) with existing foot problems—such as severe flat feet, overpronation, or toe deformities—may require extra support that barefoot shoes cannot provide. Likewise, individuals with diabetes should reconsider barefoot footwear, as reduced cushioning and protection can increase the risk of foot injuries that may go unnoticed.
Before choosing barefoot shoes, it is always best to consult with a pediatrician or podiatrist. A professional can assess whether barefoot footwear is appropriate and may recommend additional support, such as custom orthotics, if needed.
Barefoot shoes give children the chance to move as nature intended—building strength, balance, and confidence with every step.
While they may not suit every child, when chosen thoughtfully and introduced gradually, they can be a smart investment in healthy foot development and lifelong movement habits.
