Froddo and Ivančica Prepare for the Digital Product Passport

Ivančica d.d. and the Froddo brand continue their green transformation: LCA Analyses and EPD Declarations Launched with Oikon and EBRD Support as Preparation for Digital Product Passports

Ivančica d.d., a footwear manufacturer and owner of the Froddo children’s shoe brand, is launching a project to create LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) analyses and EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) documents for selected products. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Oikon – Institute for Applied Ecology from Zagreb, with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The goal of the project is to provide an objective and comparable foundation for understanding the environmental impacts of products, while enhancing transparency for customers and business partners.

Transparency across the entire product life cycle

LCA analysis enables transparency by quantifying environmental impacts across all stages of a product’s life cycle—from raw materials and production, through distribution and use, to end-of-life. Based on the results of the LCA analysis, an EPD declaration is prepared: a standardized document that clearly presents key environmental indicators of the product in accordance with relevant standards.

“Sustainability for Ivančica means managing data and taking responsibility throughout the entire product life cycle. As a company with 80 years of tradition, we understand that today, quality and accountability are proven by facts, not statements. By introducing LCA analyses and EPD declarations, we are not simply communicating ambitions; we are implementing a measurable system that allows us to optimize our products and prepare for the Digital Product Passport. This ensures that our products remain competitive in a market that increasingly demands transparency and verifiable information.”

The project also lays the groundwork for the Digital Product Passport (DPP) through structured management of data from design, production, and LCA analyses. To this end, a data management model is being defined using a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system, which consolidates technical, material, and environmental information about the product throughout its entire life cycle.

The goal is to ensure that key data are systematically stored and ready to meet future product transparency requirements in the EU market.

The project builds on Ivančica’s existing sustainability efforts, including its Sustainability Strategy through 2030 and the establishment of SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) goals aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Previous activities include:

  • Green energy in Croatia: Implementation and use of renewable energy sources in the company’s operations in Croatia, continuously reducing the carbon footprint of core operations.
  • Certified materials: Collaboration with leather suppliers holding the LWG (Leather Working Group) certification, ensuring the highest environmental and ethical standards in leather production.
  • Eco-friendly packaging: Use of recycled materials for product packaging and wrapping.
  • Digital transformation: Optimization of production processes through advanced technologies to reduce waste.

Collaboration with Oikon ensures expert methodological implementation and credibility of calculations, while support from the EBRD confirms the project’s relevance in the context of investment in environmentally responsible business practices.

By introducing EPD declarations for selected Froddo products, Ivančica d.d. further strengthens transparency, providing customers and partners with access to verified information on the products’ environmental performance.
